Smelling fresh: 9 modern men’s fragrance options for a new you

Today, we’re going to explore the best perfume for men, and describe what makes each of our modern men’s fragrance options unique. If you’re ready, let’s get started…

Alright, so there’s nothing inherently wrong with smelling like a working man. If you’ve had a long day at the office, or hauling heavy equipment at your job, then you’re probably going to have a touch of the ol’ authentic musk about you.

However, when it’s time to freshen up and make sure that you look, and feel your best, it helps to have a signature scent that you can fall back on.

While classic fragrances have their appeal, there are plenty of more modern aromas that are gaining a lot of positive attention these days.

If you’re looking for a modern men’s cologne that’s going to get you smelling great, without reminding you of your dad (or worse, your grandpa), this collection could be perfect for you.

Here’s our guide to the ideal modern perfume for men.

1.  1 Million by Paco Rabanne

Considered by many to be an instant classic, this Paco Rabanne fragrance claims to make you feel like a million bucks – and we can see why.

As one of the best perfume for men options that we’ve tested to date, 1 million combines warm cinnamon notes with a citrusy grapefruit flavour and a few hints of mint too.

For that extra masculine touch, you’ll also be able to pick out the smell of Indian Patchouli and leather – enough to get women weak at the knees.

Honestly, we find the gold bar bottle to be a little tacky – but it’s good to know that the underlying smell is all authentic power and luxury.

2.  Man, by Jimmy Choo

There are a few men’s cologne options on the market by Jimmy Choo today that we think would probably be worth mentioning in most people’s list of the best modern fragrances.

However, we didn’t want to get too focused on one particular brand.

With that in mind, we’re going to be focusing on Jimmy Choo’s “Man” fragrance for this particular list.

This is a scent that’s all about raw masculinity, rebelliousness, and confidence.

Not only does it offer a fantastic foray into the wonderful world of men’s fragrance, but it’s got some sweeter notes in there too for people who don’t want to smell entirely like a Lumberjack.

You’ve got some fantastic mandarin notes, honeydew melon, lavender, and more all mixed up for a scent that hits you like a waterfall (but in a good way).

3.  Only the Brave Wild by Diesel

Diesel’s “Only the Brave” scent has been around for a little while now, so it might not be the first thing to come to mind when you’re looking for a modern men’s fragrance review.

However, today, we’re examining something a little bit more futuristic, with “Wild.”

The third instalment in the Only the Brave collection, Wild is all about courage individuality – which we find very appealing.

The top notes in this men’s cologne are black pepper, grapefruit, and lemongrass. However, at heart, you’ll find tones of geranium and floral lavender – along with all the spice of a dash of nutmeg.

To round the full experience off, Diesel has dabbled with smells like moss, vetiver, and cedarwood, as well as the creamy aroma of coconut water.

Honestly, the whole experience is so delicious you could almost drink it. You definitely shouldn’t do that though.

4.  Aventus by Creed

Creed is a company that creates some of the best-known perfume for men in the world. There are options in the line that cater to the classic guy in search of traditional scents, as well as more modern men’s fragrance choices, like Aventus

If you’re the kind of fella who likes to live a life governed by success and vitality, then you’re going to be a huge fan of Creed.

The citrusy scent of this cologne starts with notes of mandarin and ginger, followed by earthy tones of vetiver and patchouli. Think real deep scents.

The complex aroma of Creed hangs on tones of peppercorn, mint, green apple, patchouli, and vetiver.

However, altogether, the smell creates something incredibly sexy and endearing that you just can’t quite put your finger on.

5.  Spicebomb by Viktor & Rolf

Looking at some of the best perfume for men in the modern world sometimes means straying away from well-known names like Jimmy Choo and moving into the realm of new companies, like Viktor & Rolf.

The male equivalent of Flowerbomb, Spicebomb is an explosive scent – for all the right reasons.

This delightful men’s fragrance comes in a grenade-style bottle which is sure to look fantastic on your bedside cabinet or in your bathroom.

Inside the bottle, you’ll find two contrasting accords – fiery notes of vetiver, leather, and chili compete with softer tones of grapefruit and pink pepper.

Honestly, it doesn’t sound like this random collection of scents would work well together – but they do. If you’re looking for something that screams passion, then this is the perfume for you.

6.  Polo Red by Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren is another company in the men’s fragrance world that has been around for a little while now.

Usually, people associate Polo with things like Polo Blue and Green – the older and more classic aromas from the Ralph Lauren line.

However, today, we’re concentrating on modern which is why we’re going to be looking at Polo Red instead.

Introduced in 2015, Polo Red is still relatively new. It was inspired by the adrenaline of driving a fast car on a racing strip – and the electric notes within reflect that.

You’ll find a fantastic combination of roasted coffee beans and spices coming together with amber and grapefruit to create a truly addictive scent in this cologne.

7.  L’Homme Ultime by Yves Saint Laurent

It’s pretty tough to find any men’s fragrance that could be deemed disappointing by YSL.

So, it’s probably no big surprise that you’re going to get a truly fantastic odour from this bottle of spicy notes.

A brilliant extension of the existing L’Homme range, the Ultime cologne is a powerful and commanding experience with top notes of grapefruit, cardamom, and ginger.

Once you get past the initial spice, you’ll find various fresh and floral elements, like sage and rose, which help to keep the overall experience pretty sophisticated and soft.

Imagine the inside of a man’s suit closet, combined with a few passionate bedroom images, and perhaps a Spring garden included for good measure.

The scent of L’homme is fantastic, but honestly, many members of the Blitz’d team wanted their own bottle of Ultime just for the attractive bottle.

8.  Invictus Aqua by Paco Rabanne

Imagine Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman, and you’ll have a bit of an idea what you can expect from Invictus Aqua by Paco Rabanne

Another excellent example of one of the best men’s fragrance options on the market, this product combines grapefruit and pink pepper with Yuzu for a lemony yet spicy fragrance.

Underneath those initial tones, you’ll find things like amber wood, mixed with actual seawater, ambergris, and Guaiac wood, to give you a truly energetic and lively fragrance that lasts all day long.

Although we think that this modern men’s cologne would be an excellent choice for just about any time of year – it’s particularly good for summer, when your mind is on warm ocean waters and hot beaches.

9.  Eros by Versace

Finally, we come to another amazing designer name that’s sure to make you think of sophistication and class – Versace.

Eros, by Versace, is inspired by Greek mythology – specifically the God of Love. We’re not talking soft Aphrodite notes here – we’re looking at a men’s cologne that’s all about passion and beauty.

The unique bottle is even sculpted to include an image of the Greek God of Love – which is a nice touch.

This modern perfume for men includes notes of mint oil, Italian lemon, apple, and even vanilla and cedarwood, for a fantastic well-rounded experience.

According to Versace, this is a smell designed for the passionate and confident man.
