Immune boosting drinks: Sip your way to a healthier body
Bad news fellas. Having a strong and healthy body takes a lot more than regular sessions at the gym.
While a solid ab workout, a yoga strategy, and a few weight-based exercise can make a massive difference to your health, sometimes you need to think beyond your muscles.
One of the most essential things in the human body is the immune system. Your guns might impress the ladies, but it’s your immune system that stops you from having puffy eyes and a snotty nose during cold season.
Your immune system fights off disease, helping you to overcome illness faster so you have less time feeling crummy on the couch. When properly strengthened, the same system can also make it less likely that you fall victim to disease in the first place.
So, how do you go about improving your immune system? There’s no class at the gym for better immunity. However, you can school your body into excellent shape with a few immune boosting drinks.
Here’s our guide to amazing drinks to boost immune system performance.
Immunity drinks: Beverages for better health
You probably won’t have the time or the will power to take a bunch of fruit and vegetables to work with you every morning. Pulling a bag full of fresh produce out from under your desk every break time is likely to leave you with even weirder looks than if you were to sip on a bottle of whisky.
Fortunately, with pre-made juice for immune system performance, you can ramp up the power of your health strategy, without lugging too much produce around.
More than 70% of your immune system exists in your gut, and juices are the ideal way to give it an extra helping hand. With an immunity drink, you can get all of the vitamins and minerals you need to feel better, and they’ll be absorbed faster by the body in liquid form – meaning quicker results.
For the best results, we recommend trying out a selection of different immunity drinks, preferably using fruits and vegetables from different colour groups and backgrounds.
1. Green food super juice
You’ve probably already noticed all the hype around green juices lately.
Green juices are great because they give you access to tons of anti-oxidants and healthy substances, without giving you an overdose of sugar.
Produce like apples, cucumber, lime, and other items belonging to the green colour group won’t give you a ton of opportunity to gain weight, but they’ll ensure that your immune system is in fighting-fit shape.
Wash and prep your fruits and veggies, removing any unnecessary rinds and peels before you add them to your juicer. If you like smoother juices, you can strain this mixture through a sieve.
Kale is some of the most nutrient-dense stuff in the world, it’s packed with antioxidants like quercetin, and it’s a fantastic source of vitamin C and vitamin K too. Additionally, kale will significantly reduce your cholesterol, too, helping to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Combine that with the vitamin C-boosting effects of lemon, and the ability of ginger to combat muscle soreness, and you’ve got everything you need to fight off the common cold.
Immune boosting drinks don’t come more potent than this!
2. Chamomile tea
Most people wouldn’t think of chamomile when listing immune boosting drinks. We often associate this soothing flower with stuff like relaxation and insomnia.
However, the truth is that chamomile tea can help your body to thrive in a range of ways, including reducing inflammation after an extra tough workout and treating the symptoms of cold and flu.
Over the years, chamomile’s healing properties have been used for everything from reducing the risk of osteoporosis in people with a higher risk of bone problems, to treating diabetes and reducing blood sugar.
Heck, there are even people who believe that chamomile tea can help to reduce pain and encourage comfort in people who are getting cancer treatments.
If you’re looking for a soothing way to top up your immune system, we recommend a regular mug of chamomile tea, with a slice of lemon for extra flavour.
If you want a bit of sweetness in your drink, honey is a great alternative to sweetener, as it’s rich in antioxidants and can help to lower your cholesterol too.
3. Berry booster smoothie
Feel like an immunity drink that’s going to deliver all the flavours of summer?
Try a berry booster. Berries are an excellent ingredient for strengthening the immune system because they often contain a lot of vitamin C and antioxidants.
Although you can pretty easily snack on dried berries at work, it’s much more refreshing to chug a glass of smoothie as part of your daily breakfast.
There are plenty of berry booster recipes out there, but our favourite (naturally) is one of our own concoction. For this immunity drink, you’ll need:
1 cup of strawberries
1 half cup of raspberries
Half a cup of blueberries
1 cup of coconut milk
1 cup of orange juice
The blueberries in this recipe are practically vibrating with goodness. They’re packed full of folate, potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C too. What’s more, blueberries are great for phytonutrients too.
The fact that there’s absolutely no cholesterol in blueberries and plenty of fibre means that you can even use these berries to reduce your risk of heart disease.
Add all those advantages to things like the healthy dose of manganese and potassium that comes with strawberries, and you’ve got the ultimate cardio drink right here.
Orange, tomato and carrot juice
If you’re searching for the best drink for immune system protection, then this is the juice for you. It requires virtually no prep, and you can drink it almost every time of the year, because oranges, tomatoes, and carrots are pretty much always available.
Orange and tomatoes are packed full of vitamin C, which helps to support your skin health, your joints, and your immunity. The more vitamin C you have in your system, the easier it is to fight back against viruses and infections.
For this immunity drink, you’ll need:
2 decent sized carrots
Pretty simple, right?
While you can find plenty of immunity drink recipes that just use oranges and tomatoes, we think that adding a bit of carrot to the mix really gives this beverage an extra boost.
Carrots are a fantastic source of fibre, beta carotene, vitamin K1, potassium, and more. They also help to add a bit more sweetness to your juice if you prefer something that gets your tastebuds tingling.
The beta carotene in your carrots gets converted into vitamin A in your body, which helps to support your entire body’s functioning. Plus, the antioxidants in this recipe will help to combat things like ageing skin, so you can stay looking incredible too.
Water (good old h20)
You probably think we’re just getting lazy here, right?
Wrong. While we could tell you all about the countless recipes you can throw together with fresh fruits and veggies, nothing is more important to your body than a regular dose of water.
Experimenting with different groups of fruits, vegetables, and even the occasional herb is a great way to add something unique to your diet. However, water should be the drink that you’re getting the most of any day of the week.
Water is essential to every function in the human body. It encourages healthy skin, makes sure that you can perform well at the gym, and ensures that all of your organs work properly too.
Bored of plain old water? No problem.
Add any of these to create your water-based immune boosting drinks:
Lemon: Add a slice of lemon to the mix to aid digestion, freshen your breath, and promote better hydration at the same time.
Lime: Try lime for rejuvenating skin, fighting off infection, and reducing your blood sugar. Lime can assist with weight loss too.
Watermelon: Throw a chunk of watermelon in your water to help you hydrate and improve your heart rate. Chew on the melon when you’re done with your water to prevent muscle soreness and lower inflammation.
When it comes to improving your immunity and protecting yourself from illness, you’re always going to need to follow the basics.
Protecting yourself from infection by eating correctly, washing your hands, and even visiting your doctor when you need to will help you to live a healthier and happier life.
However, if you need just a bit of extra help keeping yourself in tip-top shape, the immunity boosting drinks above have got you covered.
